Adult Fitting Competition Saturday Night June 8th Open to anyone $150 for each 2 person team Half of the proceeds go to JABGA, other half go to winning team. People’s choice will also be awarded! Rules: The objective of this contest is to gain the ability to work with a team to enhance the show ring performance of the groomed animal. Each team will consist of no more than TWO INDIVIDUALS. Each team will be responsible for bringing a goat to use in the competition. Animals can be pre-clipped and need to be washed and dried, but no products are allowed on the animal upon entering the competition. All animals will be checked for products before entering the competition area. Each team must provide their own fitting equipment. Once the contest begins, no team member may leave the area and no additional equipment may be brought into the fitting area. All team members and equipment must be in place at least 5 minutes prior to the start of the contest. Each team will be allowed 20 minutes to fit their animal. ALL FITTING TECHNIQUES MUST BE WITHIN THE ACCEPTED PRACTICES OF THE AMERICAN BOER GOAT ASSOCIATION’S SANCTIONED SHOW RULES. Judge will circulate and question participants during the 30 minutes. Points will be awarded as follows: Ability to fit- 25 points. Participation of each team member - 10 points. Organization of supplies & equipment - 5 points. Overall effect - 5 points. The DNA Program Explained Updates Starting September 1, 2021, all DNA will be voluntary, and all DNA has to be processed through the ABGA office . (Motion unanimously passed by the ABGA Board of Directors). UC Davis' current turnaround time is 15-20 business days from the date the sample is received. If samples require additional testing, no action on your part is required. No updated estimate for when testing will be completed is available. As of January 1, 2022 we are no longer sending DNA stickers. Results will be sent via email, unless requested. If you would like the DNA qualification reflected on your goat's Certificate of Registration, please send the certificate to the ABGA office. A $5 certificate reissue fee will be charged. Identification: All goats' DNA tested through ABGA must have ABGA identification such as their name and identifying marks or tattoo. Parent Verification: If you are requesting parent verification, check the type of verification (either sire, dam, or both), and BE SURE to fill in the Sire and/or Dam registration number and Veterinary Genetics Laboratory (VGL) Case ID Number. If you do not have a VGL Case ID number, you must purchase the DNA Sample Instructions for each parent you are verifying. PROCESSING TIME UC Davis will EMAIL your DNA Sample Instructions to your email address within three (3) business days of ONLINE submission to ABGA. If you did not provide an email address, the DNA Sample Instructions will be mailed to you. If you do not receive your DNA Sample Instructions within 3 business days, CHECK YOUR JUNK EMAIL . PULLING AND SENDING HAIR SAMPLE DNA Sample Instructions include instructions on how to pull the hair for the test and send it to UC Davis. Be sure to get the roots of the hair sample. Be sure to use a clean paper envelope. Be sure to write the goat's information on the envelope [name, registration number, your name]. Send the DNA Sample to UC Davis following the instructions in the DNA Sample Instructions you received. Send the confirmation to ABGA. ABGA Rule 802–I In cases where the submitting party is not the owner of record, an unopened vial, straw, or other container containing semen that has been identified in accordance with Rule 401.B is required for DNA test results to be accepted by ABGA. What does the DNA test do for me? It identifies the specific genetic markers associated with the goat you have tested. It allows for parent verification and future identification of that goat as the parent of any kid(s). It will show on your goat’s registration papers, and on online searches people do that your goat’s identity is verified and recorded through the DNA test. It will allow you to show your goat’s parentage has been verified, if you have requested parent verification. What does the test do for ABGA? It lets us build our database of information on registered goats. Once we have that start we can ask UC Davis to test the samples for more markers that will give us the opportunity to improve our animals. Will DNA be used for research? Yes. UC Davis retains the right to use all samples stored at the VGL for research, whether the tests are performed for individuals, or for individuals through associations. Research and the benefits that it can provide to producers is the main focus of the program for the ABGA. As more members participate in the DNA testing program this will make meaningful research a reality for our animals for the first time. Who owns the DNA sample? All DNA samples are stored at UC Davis, and VGL retains the right to use any samples stored there for research, whether they are done for individuals, or for individuals through registries. For contract customer registries like ABGA, the registry has ultimate ownership of the sample. However, the owner receives the results of the DNA tests requested on their goats. This gives ABGA members the guarantee that should UC Davis decide to dispose of samples processed through ABGA requests, ABGA can move those samples to another facility so they are still available for research that will benefit all members. Should it matter to me that the ABGA shares ownership of the sample? Yes. It gives you the guarantee that your sample is safe, regardless of what UC Davis may decide in the future. It makes it easier and cheaper for members to DNA test their goats, and verify parentage, if they wish to do that. Who gets a copy of the DNA Report listing the Markers? For contract customer registries, like ABGA, the owner of the goat will receive a copy of the results to be kept with the animal, and the registry receives a copy of the results to be stored in the appropriate registry herd book. Does ABGA make the DNA Report on my goat available to anyone else? No, absolutely not. If you want someone to have that information, you must provide it to them yourself. Can I get other animals DNA results? No. Only the owner of the DNA sample can get that information. The member will need to contact the owner of the animal who is also the owner of the DNA to get those results. Can I submit DNA directly to UC Davis? You can submit directly to UC Davis for your own records, but unfortunately ABGA does not accept DNA results that are submitted directly to UC Davis. Can the test tell me if my goat is a percentage or fullblood? No. With current information available, there is no way to tell what percentage Boer is in a goat. Is there an extra fee for parent verification? No. The ABGA included this service in our price of doing the DNA test. Will I be told who the parents are? No. The test will show how close they matched, or didn’t match what you indicated on the form. Can I request parent verification of my goat(s) if I don’t own one of the parents? Yes, but only if you verify parentage through ABGA, the parents are registered and have been DNA tested through ABGA. The goat you are verifying parentage of must have some form of an ABGA registration or listing paper number and then all you need is the goat’s parents’ registration numbers to verify the parentage of your goat. If the goat’s parents have not been DNA tested, you would need to order DNA test sample kits on the parents as well as the goat at the same time. If you verify through UC Davis, and/or your goat’s parents have not been DNA tested through ABGA, you must have the VGL Case ID number from their owner. Do I need to keep a sample of the hair? Both UC Davis and ABGA suggest that when you pull a sample to send in for testing, you pull another sample. Place it in an envelope the same way you do the sample you’re sending in and write the identifying information on the envelope. Store it in a DRY, safe place. The best protection of your sample is to leave it in storage at UC Davis where there are documented safeguards in place. Who Owns the Rights to Do Research on the Sample or Sell those Rights? A sample by itself is worthless for research. However, UC Davis retains research rights on all samples it houses, whether they come from individual customers or contract customer associations, like the ABGA. The " Unlock a Lock" event will return in 2024. Junior members need to participate in all four contests on Saturday, June 8th – including Skill-a-thon, Public Speaking, Sales Talk, and Goat Judging – to qualify for a chance to "Unlock a Lock" and win different prizes. Unlock a Lock will take place on Monday, June 10 during the lunch hour. Prizes include Airpods, fitting mats, Sullivan Supply accessories, and more! JABGA Skill-a-thon Skill-a-thon contest is a quiz to test your knowledge of the goat industry. Each age division will have their own test. The number of questions per test is as follows: Novice Division– 35 questions Junior, Intermediate and Senior Division – 50 questions A moderator will be present. If you have trouble reading, do not worry; just make sure you let us know before arriving at the contest and an assistant will help you with reading your quiz. Pens and pencils are provided. Casual dress. The use of electronic devices is prohibited. Any contestant found to be using a phone, headphones, watches, or any other electronic device will be disqualified from the contest. No handling of goats for any of the classes. Any contestant found to be using a phone, headphones, watches, or any other electronic device will be disqualified from the contest. There will be one class that will be oral reasons required for all senior individuals. There will be one class with 3 questions for all age divisions, that will be used for tiebreakers. Materials: Notepad and a pencil. Dress: There is no required dress for this contest although many participants wear jeans and polo shirts or button downs. Photo by RJ Imaging JABGA Sales Talk Sales talk uses a live setting complete with a live animal, photo or pedigree and potential buyers. This contest is a mock sales situation—you are selling your animal to buyers. The purpose is to evaluate the effectiveness of the presentation and the contestant’s ability to merchandise Boer Goats. Contestants will be judged on their knowledge of the animal, semen, or embryos they are selling, their ability to relay important information, and their overall effectiveness in convincing the judges to buy their product. Time allotted: 4-7 minutes. Materials: A live animal (another individual should hold the animal), photo (no larger than 8 x 10) or a registration certificate for the animal, semen or embryos being “sold”. Dress: There is no required dress, but it is important to keep in mind that appearance is important when marketing yourself and your animals. Nice jeans, boots, and button-down shirts are suggested. Each contestant must make the presentation without a microphone. Contestants shall not be penalized for moving about or using (or not using) a podium. Contestants will be penalized one point per second on each judge’s score sheet for being over or under the time allowed for each speech. Ties: in the event of ties in public speaking, they will be broken by comparing scores in the following judging sections: Content Delivery Language Novice Division No less than 3 minutes and more than 5 minutes. Topic: What should you do in the showring? Junior Division No less than 3 minutes and no more than 5 minutes. Topic: How do you decide what buck to breed your doe to? Intermediate Division No less than 4 minutes and no more than 6 minutes. Topic: Why or why not is record keeping important for the care of your herd? Senior Division No less than 5 minutes and no more than 7 minutes. Topic: Pick a biosecurity issue. How would you overcome this issue within your herd? Participants may stop by the JABGA office, or other designated location, and color in their 45-minute time slot from 9:00-2:00. Who can participate? The JABGA will be having a coloring contest for all junior members in the novice and junior age divisions. Supplies: All coloring sheets, pencils, crayons, and markers will be provided. Rules: Each participant will have 45 minutes to complete their coloring sheet. Only one child per coloring sheet. All coloring will be done in the JABGA office, or other designated location. Judging: All coloring sheets will be judged prior to the JABGA awards ceremony. The winners will be announced at the awards ceremony. Attendance is required to receive an award. JABGA Marketing Contest What is it? The JABGA is introducing a new contest this year. The marketing contest is a way for our youth to share highlights of JABGA and all that it has to offer. The contest will highlight JABGA nationals and the regional show series contests that take place in June. It is also encouraged to focus on the location of nationals and all Louisville has to offer. How to participate? Members will create a social media post on Facebook, Instagram or both using #jabganationals. Junior members may use their own accounts or may use the account of a parent. The post will be a digital design created by the junior member to market the JABGA national show being in Louisville and all JABGA contests/ show events that take place during this week. The digital design will be posted online and then a high quality print out of the design will need to be submitted to the JABGA office in Louisville. Rules: This contest will NOT be required to participate in the unlock a lock. This contest will NOT go towards points for overall high point in the regional show series. Posts will need to be on social media no later than May 27th, 2024. The Junior members digital design will Not be judged based off of likes or shares from social media. Junior members will need to have a high-quality printout of their digital design and turn it into the JABGA office by Tuesday June 11th at noon. Do Not send the printout to the ABGA office in San Angelo. Judging process: To be fully entered into the contest the junior member must have a digital design on social media using #jabganationals and also have a high quality printed out version turned into the JABGA office. All digital designs will be judged, and the winners will be announced at the JABGA awards ceremony. Attendance is required to receive awards. Caleb Boardman lives in Bryan, TX with his wife Kylie and 3 children – Cash (6), Tatum (4) and Tinsley (4). Caleb has spent the past 9 years on faculty at the University of Wyoming and most recently at Texas A&M as the coordinator and head coach of the livestock judging teams. Over that period, his teams won over 25 contests and were Reserve National Champions in 2022 and 2023. He coached 13 academic All-Americans and over 100 individual top-10 finishes. Caleb is originally from Northern Wyoming where he grew up on a large cattle operation focused on SimAngus genetics. Caleb attended Coffeyville Community College in Kansas where was named an All-American Livestock Judge and received his associates degree. He then attended Texas A&M University and was on the 2011 Reserve National Champion Livestock Judging Team and earned a Bachelor of Science degree in Agribusiness. He continued his education at A&M receiving his Master’s in ruminant nutrition while also serving as the graduate assistant coach, including coaching the 2013 National Champion Team. Caleb and his family own and operate Boardman Livestock focusing on blackface club lambs and enjoy working with families and youth in the showring.
