ABGA MEMBERS: Renew for 2023 with iCompete! ABGA will be processing membership renewals for 2023 through our new membership software, iCompete. Learn more about renewing your ABGA membership through iCompete here: https://www.abga.org/post/renew-for-2023-with-icompete View instructions to renew your ABGA membership through iCompete here: https://www.abga.org/post/create-icompete-login-and-link-to-abga-membership Frequently Asked Questions: What is iCompete? Like many breed associations and registries, ABGA has used third-party platforms for a long time. ABGA has used Agricultural Business Research Institute (ABRI) of Australia for several membership platforms, including iCompete. iCompete is a new, streamlined software that is equipped to handle ABGA memberships, renewals, registry work, and show points in a single platform for all members. It will eventually replace the Online Live and Blue Screen systems and provide ABGA members and staff with a more user-friendly interface. ABGA will “roll out” the iCompete software in three stages: Phase 1 (renewals/memberships), Phase 2 (registrations), and Phase 3 (shows/events). When can I begin renewing for 2023? ABGA members can renew for the 2023 year starting on DECEMBER 1, 2022. Members must be renewed by JANUARY 1, 2023, to continue their membership services (email and communication updates from ABGA and access to iCompete), vote in ABGA organizational elections, and remain an ABGA member in good standing. Can I renew my membership if I owe money to ABGA? Outstanding balances for ABGA work must be paid before members can renew their membership. Members can pay outstanding balances when creating an iCompete login and linking it to their ABGA membership. Can I still renew with ABGA via check and renewal form, or only through iCompete? We encourage members to renew using iCompete at this time to improve and simplify their member experience. ABGA is excited to introduce this new software system to our members! We do accept checks along with ABGA renewal forms via mail or email (mail@abga.org). Forms should be sent via special mailing to ensure confirmed delivery. Renewal forms can be found on our website: https://www.abga.org/forms Can I renew my ABGA membership over the phone? ABGA does not accept membership renewals over the phone. However, you are welcome to contact the ABGA office at (325) 486-2242 or mail@abga.org with any questions or concerns about 2023 renewals or iCompete. Can I do registrations, transfers, service memos, etc. in iCompete? This capability will not be available to members until Phase 2 of the iCompete software rollout. ABGA will announce when members can begin completing registration work in iCompete. Be watching our email blasts and social media! What information do I need to renew my membership through iCompete? You will need your ABGA member number, the postal/ZIP code associated with your ABGA membership, and the email address associated with your ABGA membership. You will also need to access the following link via an Internet browser using a cell phone, tablet, or computer: https://abga.icompete.net/ Instructions to renew your ABGA membership through iCompete can be found on our website: https://www.abga.org/post/create-icompete-login-and-link-to-abga-membership Can I renew a junior (JABGA) membership through iCompete? Yes! Adult members must renew for 2023 in order to renew associated JABGA memberships. Please renew your adult membership FIRST before renewing your associated JABGA membership. If you are an adult member and you are missing an associated JABGA membership when linking your membership with iCompete, PLEASE CONTACT THE ABGA OFFICE ASAP. What should I do if I have questions or concerns about renewing through iCompete? Members should contact the ABGA office at (325) 486-2242 or mail@abga.org with questions or concerns about their 2023 renewals. MINUTES: The ABGA Board of Directors meeting minutes from October 11 will be posted as soon as they are approved. You can view the previous minutes HERE. FROM ABGA'S DNA COMMITTEE: DNA is in every living thing and is the code made up of repeating units called “base pairs” known by the first letter of their name: A, T, G, and C. There are several technologies used for DNA testing, but in livestock, two of the more common technologies are Microsatellite Testing which counts the number of repeating segments, and SNP (Single Nucleotide Polymorphism, pronounced “snip”) Testing which looks at the content of the DNA or what the actual A, T, G, or C is at a specific location in the genetic code. Most livestock species have switched to SNP technology because it has applications beyond simple parentage testing thus allowing determination of genetic condition status, physical trait status, and to improve the accuracy of traditional Expected Progeny Differences (EPDs). Here is a list of the acronyms you see regularly: DE - Dam Excluded DQ - Dam Qualified OT - Original Test PE - Parent Excluded PQ - Parent Qualified SE - Sire Excluded SQ - Sire Qualified SNP (pronounced “snip”) - Single Nucleotide Polymorphism A dive into genomics is available HERE. For more information on application specific to goats, read HERE, HERE, and HERE. REQUESTING DNA TESTING: According to ABGA Rules and Regulations, members cannot request DNA testing for animals they do not own. For more information, please see the ABGA Rules and Regulations.
