    Scholarship To benefit young people with big dreams and create a positive influence on their future, the ABGA offers scholarships to junior members. The American Boer Goat Association Scholarship Program is designed to encourage the educational enhancement of young Boer goat breeders by awarding annual scholarships. This program is open to any active ABGA or JABGA member, 21 years of age or under, who has been involved in ABGA or JABGA programs.

    Kim Veal Region 10 Kim Veal has been raising Boer Goats for over twenty years, since 1996. In 1999, her family and she started showcasing their goats. Kim has been hosting the Peach State Classic and the Georgia Nationals in Perry, Georgia, for the past 20 years, and served as the superintendent of Boer Goats.     Meet Justin Burns, from Eastland Texas, a proud owner and operator of J and J Livestock. Justin, along with his wife Jennifer and two children, manage a herd of approximately 200 Does and 100 show-type sheep. ABGA National Show Judge: Justin Burns After earning his Bachelor of Science degree from Sacramento State University in California, he became passionate about educating young individuals entering the goat industry. As a result, he has devoted his time, knowledge, and expertise to curating and teaching numerous educational seminars for the livestock sector. With experience judging market and breeding shows in 27 different states, Justin is committed to staying up-to-date on market trends, utilizing superior genetics, and animal evaluation techniques to enhance his herd.   • 2023 National Show Drug Testing Policy

    March 10, 2023 American Boer Goat Association Board Members, The American Boer Goat Association (ABGA) National Show Committee thoughtfully recommends the following updated Drug Testing Policy and Procedure for the 2023 ABGA National Show. It is recommended by the Committee that the ABGA adapts and enforces a zero-tolerance drug policy in correlation with current industry standards and best practices for overall animal health. In summary, changes to the policy include but are not limited to: The deadline to administer prescription medication and/or therapeutic drugs to any registered or un-registered market animal(s) participating in the ABGA National Show will be Monday, June 5th, 2023. Any prescription drugs required after June 5th, 2023 will require Veterinary administration and signed prescription. Banned substances will include prescription medications, therapeutic drugs, and any off-label substances. All Division Champion(s) and Overall Grand Champion(s) and Reserve Grand Champion(s) and a selected amount of randoms will be drug tested. Drug testing may include but will not be limited to one or more of the following: DNA, hair, urine, blood or other body samples. Drug testing samples will be collected as recommended by the Texas A&M Laboratory Representative to assist in understanding the timeline of administration. The National Show Committee recommends the use of the following reference when describing prescription medication and therapeutic drugs: FARAD.org . This reference should be used as an educational tool when discussing the updates to the ABGA National Show Drug Testing Policy and Procedure to the ABGA membership.   • Ellyana Sand

    Ellyana Sand, daughter of Ryan and Lindsy Sand is the oldest of 5 children and currently a junior at Albany High School. Ellyana grew up in Central Minnesota where her family started their farm, Sand Country Acres in 2015. Their herd started out with a couple of bottle babies, but throughout the years has progressed to having a herd of 75, focusing on raising ABGA registered stock. Ellyana has enjoyed showing her goats throughout the years, with her career highlight being the 2023 National Show where she exhibited the JABGA Bred and Owned Overall Grand Champion Buck. Her evolving stock has created opportunities to participate in many sales in recent years, which has allowed for her to sell her stock to many different parts of the country. Along with goats, her family has a few beef cattle that they raise and show through 4-H. Ellyana is excited for the opportunity she has to serve on the JABGA board. She looks forward to the new ways she has to share her passion for the Boer Goat industry and represent and work with the youth in her Area, and across the Country. She has gained experience in leadership roles, currently serving as her school's FFA Chapter President and also has held many officer positions within her county’s 4-H program.   • PERFORMANCE TESTING

    PERFORMANCE TESTING (From Rule 1200 in the ABGA Rules & Regulations). A. ABGA Performance Test Requirements i. The performance test must be open to buck kids only. ii. The test must be conducted under the supervision of a disinterested agency, such as a State Agricultural Institution, State Extension Agency, etc. iii. The test must be between 60 and 90 days long. iv. Bucks must be less than 6 months old at the start of the test. v. The test must be open to all who wish to participate and have qualifying animals. vi. Testing procedures and any requested deviations from these requirements must be submitted in writing to the ABGA Board of Directors for approval at least 3 months prior to the start of the test. vii. A final Test Report, including the total number of animals on test well as the total number of ABGA registered animals on test, will be submitted by the test supervision to the ABGA Office withing 90 days of the conclusion of the test. viii. The final test report must include the following data for each AGBA registered animal on test: a. ABGA Registration number. b. Name, as registered with ABGA. c. Tattoos d. Date of Birth. e. Owner. f. Date weighed and animal weight at the start of the test period. g. Date weighed and animal weight at the end of the test period. h. Calculated Average Daily Gain (ADG) used to determine ADG ranking. ix. It is suggested but not required that when available, the following end of test data also be included in the final test report for each ABGA registered animal on test: a. Birth type. b. Rib eye area. c. Loin eye area. d. Rear leg circumference. e. Fat thickness. f. Scrotal circumference. g. Height at withers. h. Feed efficiency. i. final animal index score. x. It is suggested but not required that at least 4 animals by one sire be entered in the same test. B. Performance Test Support (All performance test support is at the discretion of ABGA) i. Performance test support will be available only to performance tests approved by ABGA in accordance with Rule 1200.A after January 1, 2014. ii. ABGA will provide monetary support to the testing agency to be allocated to awards. iii. ABGA will provide cash payouts for the top performing ABGA registered Fullblood or Purebred bucks entered in ABGA approved performance tests. C. Ennobled Herd Book Points i. Only bucks entered under their ABGA registration number in an approved Performance Test, will be eligible to earn points from a Performance Test as described in the ABGA Criteria for Ennoblement of a Boer Goat. (See Rule 1000, Ennoblement Program). ii. Points for approved Performance Tests will be awarded to top performing Fullblood or Purebred bucks based on their Average Daily Gain (ADG) ranking among the other Fullblood and Purebred bucks on test, according to the following chart: iii. Additional points for ABGA approved Performance Tests will be awarded to top performing bucks, based on individual Average Daily Gain (ADG), using the following schedule: a. Bucks gaining 0.55 lbs./day to less than 0.60 lbs./day shall be awarded 1 point. b. Bucks gaining 0.60 lbs./day to less than 0.65 lbs./day shall be awarded 2 points. c. Bucks gaining 0.65 lbs./day to less than 0.70 lbs./day shall be awarded 3 points. d. Bucks gaining 0.70 lbs./day to less than 0.75 lbs./day shall be awarded 4 points. e. Bucks gaining 0.75 lbs./day to less than 0.80 lbs./day shall be awarded 5 points. f. Bucks gaining 0.80 lbs./day or more shall be awarded 6 points, plus an additional 1 point for each additional 0.01 lbs./day over 0.80 lbs./day. iv. Example: If a buck is ranked 1st on test with an ADG of 0.92 lbs./day in an approved Performance Test having a total of 20 Fullblood or Purebred bucks on test, he shall be awarded 10 points as allowed in 1200.C.ii, as well as an additional 18 points as allowed in 1200.C.iii, for a total of 28 points.
